Hi there. My name is Julie and I am the wife of a pastry chef. I stay at home with our two children Kai and Cassia. Kai is three years old and Cassia is one year old. I am so in love with food that my daughter's name means cinnamon. My family thinks it strange, but I just think it's beautiful.
I don't know if it's every girls dream to marry a pastry chef, but I've been to enough food functions/events to see that my husband and other chefs get hit on by many women. You know comments like "can I take you home" or "I want to take you home". Innocent flirtation, or are they serious? I know Jimmy (a.k.a the pastry chef, my husband) wouldn't take any of these women's offers, but that does show that women want a man who can cook; better yet someone who can make their favorite thing...dessert! Yes, Jimmy happens to be my dream guy in every way!
Well, being the wife of a pastry chef has it's perks but it also has it's downs. Well, one down really. My husband happens to work for a very busy hotel which makes him on call 24/7. I joke and say he has a doctor's schedule. I don't know what a doctor's schedule is but I would imagine it's similar to Jimmy's. He sleeps with his cell phone near by because he will get calls or texts from the overnight bakers when they have problems. He gets calls and texts on his day off. Yes I said day and not days because he only gets one real day off. He spends his supposed to be second day off either doing work half day at home or at the hotel. I'm used to it, but it's starting to get to me! I miss my husband and the children are getting older and need to spend more time with their dad.
Now the perks. I don't have to feel guilty about purchasing expensive chocolates because I can call it research! I can eat as much pastries, chocolates and other desserts as I want without my husband telling me that it is going to make me fat. Well, because you know I could just say he made me that way. We always have premium ingredients in the house along with a never ending supply of chocolate! Our son, Kai, has become a connoisseur of chocolates, it's kinda funny. He'll take a bite of a regular chocolate bar, make a face and say, "It's not good", then spit it out! His favorite chocolate right now is Callebaut's milk chocolate called Java. He also likes dark chocolate.
Cassia doesn't have a taste for chocolate yet. She prefers fruit.
If you're wondering...no I am not as big as a house. When you are surrounded with sweets you learn moderation. Another great thing is the travel. Most people think that just because you have kids you don't get to travel as much. Not us. Jimmy prefers to take us on all of his pastry adventures. This year we've traveled to Montreal and New York City. Adventure is definitely the word! Traveling with children is a challenge, but if you are well prepared it can be alot of fun! I am now getting things in order for our next pastry related trip to New Jersey. Jimmy will be competing in the National Bread and Pastry competition in Atlantic City.
He will be doing the pastry part of the competition and his partner Sandra will be taking care of the baking part. I think that they make a great team. I can't wait! Jimmy and I will be posting about the upcoming trip along with tips for traveling with kids and dining out with the kids.
