I've been reading every label for packaged foods lately and wonder why there has to be so many different types of sugar in almost everything. Sometimes I get drawn in by the call of ready to eat cookies for sheer convenience (when the craving hits, it's gotta be instant gratification), but then I read the list of ingredients and put the cookies back on the shelf and tell the kids, "We can make better ones at home."
Which is true because at home I only use one type of sugar in my cookies (raw turbinado sugar). So, I experimented and made a sugar less cupcake which tasted more like a 'Morning Glory' muffin with out the bran, so then a muffin is what I will call it. The children like it and so do I. Especially when topped with cinnamon-honey cream cheese.
I also tried making my own granola bar, which by the way is so easy. I just combined my sugar less cereal with chopped nuts, chopped dried fruit and almond butter. Poured it into a quarter sheet pan for shape and cut out bars. It looks just like the packaged expensive ones in the stores and the best part it has no added sugar! The sweetness comes from the dried fruit and believe me, that is sweet enough.
Now, I am exploring all the things that I can make with limited use of sugar. Also I am testing out gluten free products.
